    New York: Mitchell Kennerley, 1913. 95 pages. Akins was a Pulitzer Prize-winning American playwright, poet, and author. This is her first major dramatic work. The comedy failed although it was admired by H. L. Mencken and George Jean Nathan.

    In Mencken's book, My Life As An Author and Editor, Chapter XVII, Mencken says, "Nathan and I had both been greatly impressed by her fantastic play, 'Papa,' published by Mitchell Kennerley in 1914, but not put upon the stage until 1919." He further elaborates on his relationship with Akins in the next few pages. ISBN: 281AIB1025149.

    Inscribed by the author on front free endpaper: 'For "Binkie" Beaumont - with the hope that it really is a good omen!' and dated March 9th 1936. Hugh "Binkie" Beaumont was a British theatre manager and producer and one of the most successful and influential manager-producers on the West End during the mid-20th century. Beaumont produced "The Old Maid," in 1936, the dramatization of Edith Wharton's work for which Akins received the Pulitzer Prize (see Hermione Lee, 'Edith Wharton, p. 736). The play starred Lillian Gish.
