This edition published as head shops and marijuana culture were beginning to flourish in the early 1970s; the original complete text is supplemented with a new introduction, chronology, bibliography and illustrations, providing historical and scholarly context.

The Ludlow Library was the world's largest library of psychoactive drug books and related materials, which was named after the author and housed in San Francisco. It was used by hundreds of writers and researchers on drug studies. The Library's board of advisers included Albert Hofmann, Alexander Shulgin, Andrew Weil, Oscar Janiger, Ralph Metzner, Laura Huxley, Allen Ginsberg and Lawrence Ferlinghetti.

The illustrations by Wilfried Satty, whose mash-ups of Gustave Dore engravings appropriately connect the book to its 19th century origins, with a dose of drug-fueled surrealism and a healthy shot of Monty Python animation. ISBN: B0033TMZ9Y.

First edition thus. Near fine in a near fine dust jacket. This is an interesting association copy connecting figures in the burgeoning Northern California cannabis culture of the 1970s. Inscribed by Ludlow curator Michael R. Aldrich, who wrote the first Ph.D dissertation on pot, and sponsored the first California Marijuana Initiative, to defense attorney Bob Cogen, who defended people charged with violating drug laws -- most famously members of the Native American Church charged with possession of peyote and mescaline in Arizona -- and in the marijuana-rich "Emerald Triangle" region of Humboldt County, California. Signed by Satty on the limitation page. Copy number 155. [JSP01]
