  • Soul Sister by Halsell, Grace
    Halsell, Grace
    Soul Sister

    First Edition Thus

Greeenwich, CT: Fawcett, 1970. 224 pages. The account of a white journalist's experiences posing as an African American. ISBN: 281AIB1042582.

First mass market edition (first printing). Very good to near fine in wrappers. Inscribed by Halsell, "For Professor Stephen Jay Gould, with my admiration for your view of life. Grace Halsell, 9.21.74."

Your cataloguer would like to know the story behind the inscription. At the time, Gould had yet to publish a single book and his Mismeasure of Man, a scientific refutation of racial superiority myths, would not be published until 1981. The inscription suggests that Gould may have already been thinking about the subject in the early 1970s. A remarkable association copy.

  • Annie's Coming Out by Crossley, Rosemary and Anne McDonald
    Crossley, Rosemary and Anne McDonald
    Annie's Coming Out

Victoria, Australia: Penguin Books, 1984. 256 pages. The story of a girl (McDonald) with cerebral palsy who was institutionalized at a young age and the efforts of her therapist (Crossley) to bring her back into society.

Crossley used "facilitated communication" with McDonald, helping her point out letters and signal her intent. A great deal of controversy surrounds the pair, with many skeptics asserting that Crossley was answering for McDonald.

In any case, McDonald earned a college degree and is celebrated as a disability activist in Australia, where a clinic for people who are unable to speak is named for her. This memoir was adapted into a film (released in the US as A Test of Love). ISBN: 9780140056884.

Third printing of the revised edition. Very good in wrappers. Inscribed by both authors, "For the measure of a man. To Stephen Jay Gould in great admiration. Anne McDonald & Rosemary Crossley." Presumably McDonald signed with the assistance of Crossley. The inscription refers to Gould's book, The Mismeasure of Man. Very uncommon signed by both authors, and a nice association.
