  • The American Mother Goose by Wood, Ray; illustrated by Ed Hargis; foreword by J. Frank Dobie
Wood, Ray; illustrated by Ed Hargis; foreword by J. Frank Dobie
    The American Mother Goose

    First Edition

(Beaumont, TX): (Greystone Press), (1938). [32] pages. 5 by 7 inches. A collection of folk nonsense rhymes, which Wood called "Peckerwood" verse. Each rhyme is illustrated by two drawings. Unexpectedly--based on the subject matter and the sources--only a couple of the rhymes are racist. To his discredit Dobie, in his short introduction, manages to make reference to "darkies" and he quotes only one rhyme, which also happened to be the only one that uses the N-word.
