  • Proper Names (Meridian: Crossing Aesthetics) by Levinas, Emmanuel
    Levinas, Emmanuel
    Proper Names (Meridian: Crossing Aesthetics)

    First Edition

Stanford, CA: Stanford University Press, 1996. 191 pages. A philosophical treatment of ethics drawing on Martin Heidegger and Jewish theology. ISBN: 9780804723527.

First edition (first printing). A fine copy in wrappers (paperback). This copy belonged to the painter R. B. Kitaj, with his last name neatly written in red ink below the title on the half-title page, a practice he followed only for books he read closely. Also with bookseller Peter Howard's "lem" code--used for books from Kitaj's library--on the half-title.

Levinas's influence on Kitaj's thinking is alluded to in the Second Diasporist Manifesto, where Kitaj writes, "I'm tempted to add Levinas and Scholem and Benjamin to my personal gang of art guys. Yes, add them!" (part 17). Then later, in section 33, he continues, "Levinas for painting. Face to Face. The Face of the Other. Think of him as a rare Jewish angel of face-souls... Keep reading his thrilling books for ethical art energies, etc."

Kitaj has underlined and marked a half-dozen places in the text of this copy of Levinas. A nice connection between an important contemporary Jewish painter and one of his sources of inspiration.
