Bionomics: The Inevitability of Capitalism
First Edition
New York: John Macrae / Henry Holt and Company, 1990. 423 pages. An influential book on economics and investing, likening the economy to an ecosystem rather than a machine. ISBN: 9780805010688.
First edition (first printing). Near fine in a near fine dust jacket. Inscribed by the author to Stephen Jay Gould, who is cited a number of times in the text: "To Stephen Jay Gould, for all you have taught me. Michael Rothschild." A nice association copy.
From the Harvard office library of the paleontologist and leading advocate for evolution, Stephen Jay Gould. With a tipped in bookplate indicating the provenance.
Intellectually, Gould understood the true nature of these bookplates, but the book collector in him appreciated them. In his essay "A Seahorse for All Races" Gould writes about one of his prized possessions, a book from Charles Dickens' library: "Dickens made no annotations, but a bookplate on the cover, presumably inserted as a come-on for a sale after Dickens' death in 1870, does prove that [he] kept and shelved the book."
We offer our Gould bookplates, printed letterpress in two colors, in the same spirit.

Robinson Crusoe's Money; or, the Remarkable Financial Fortunes and Misfortunes of a Remote Island Community.
First Edition
New York: Harber & Brothers, Publishers, 1876. 118 pages. Illustrations by Thomas Nast. An economic parable, illustrated by the great political cartoonist of the day, advocating a "free silver" monetary policy. At the time, the US was on the gold standard, whcih meant that anyone could trade gold metal for gold coinage (a "free gold" exchange policy). Free silver advocated the same for silver, even though the value of silver coins was greater than the value of silver bullion. For example, say a quarter contained 15 cents worth of silver, a free silver policy would have allowed Americans to take 15 cents of silver and turn it into 25 cents worth of money, thereby expanding the money supply. ISBN: B00AZ19LZE.
First edition (first printing). A very good copy with no dust jacket. Green cloth with blindstamp on cover. Gilt lettering and decorative border on spine. Wear to edges and minor scuffs. Former owner's bookplates on front pastdown. Former owner's news clippings about (and cartoons by) Thomas Nast glued to front free endpaper, and to publisher's ads on rear pages following last numbered page.
