The United States with an Excursion into Mexico: Handbook for Travellers
First Edition
Leipsic (i.e. Leipsig): Karl Baedeker, Publishers, 1893. xc, 516 pages. The first Baedeker guide to the United States and the first to be written in English. Hinrichsen E259. ISBN: 281AIB1025197.
First edition (first printing). An exceptional copy, seemingly never opened for reading. Collated complete will all maps, with most, including the large map of the Unites States, never unfolded. There is a very slight bit of fraying to the cloth in three or four places. The spine is slightly dimmed. There is a small previous owner's name on the front free endaper. To top it off, this copy is in the original unprinted dust jacket with the title label affixed to the spine, as was Baedeker's custom in the 1890s. The jacket has some chips and wear at the corners and spine ends, and several folds (it may have been folded and inserted in the book, which is why it survives). A great copy, almost never found this nice, let alone in the jacket. [JSP01; JHG2019]
