Murdoch attempted to adapt her novel for the stage but was dissatisfied with the results and nearly abandoned the project. For a while she was working with the West End producer Michael Codron, and they discussed the project on September 29, 1962. Soon after, she sent her working draft to J. B. Priestley, who offered to collaborate on the play. Their joint script became a big hit, playing more than 1000 performances. Inscribed by Price to his typist Dorothy Roberts ("Dot"): "Still working! With long good years of love & thanks & hope." An ALS to Dot from a co-worker laid in reports news of Price's health. Also laid in is a program from a performance of the play at Berkeley Plantation.

Scott Fitzgerald. The play opened at the Coronet Theater on Broadway in December 1958 and closed in May 1959 after 189 performances. Jason Robards, Jr. played the Fitzgerald-like down-and-out writer, and the English actor Rosemary Harris played his wife. Robards won the Tony for his performance. ISBN: 281AIB1041667.
