In 1647 Barleu wrote an account of the Dutch colonial empire in Brazil inspired by the leadership of John Mauricio of Nassau, who was appointed governor of the Dutch West India Company in 1637 and continued as governor until 1644.     First edition thus. A very fine copy in full leather covers over boards with gold insignia and lettering. Covers with bevelled edges. Spine with five raised bands. Marbled endpapers. Binding by A. V. Emmott & Sons, Houston. Presentation copy signed by the Minister of Education with typed presentation (translated from Portugeuse): "Rio, 7.7.40 Mr. Judge Florencio de Abreu, I am pleased to offer you an example of the work of Caspar Barleu - 'Brasil under the rule of Joao Mauricio de Nassar', translated and published by the Ministry of Education. Bogota, enero 1947." A nice inscription to the Colombian poet, who has underlined many passages and marked others in the margins. A nice association copy and an interesting example of marginalia.

    First edition (first printing). This set needs rebinding and internal care. Both volumes are damaged, covers are worn and chipped, boards are showing at edges. Foxing is present in both volumes. In Vol. 1 there is cracking between some signatures, top portion of page 159-160 is missing but doesn't affect text. In Vol. 2 cover is detached. There is ink damage to lower page edges in the last half of the volume which does not affect the text but does make the paper brittle.

    University of Chicago Press, 1949. 199 pages. Illustrated with photographs by Collier and his wife, Mary Trumbull Collier. At age 12, Collier (1913-1992) became the apprentice to painter, Maynard Dixon, and learned photography from Dixon's wife, Dorothea Lange. In his twenties, he worked with Paul Strand in Taos, New Mexico, and later joined the Farm Security Administration (FSA) as a photographer. His work was included in Edward Steichen's landmark exhibition, Family of Man, at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Later in life, Collier taught photography and anthropology in San Francisco, ultimately retiring as a professor from San Francisco State University. His major published work is this study of the native peoples of Ecuador, for which he took hundreds of photographs. ISBN: B000W3SVDI.

    This copy is nicely inscribed on the front free endpaper, "For Northy, with love, John Collier Jr." A very good copy (hardcover) in moderately edgeworn, price-clipped jacket missing chips at the spine ends (affecting the TH of the title and part of the spine imprint).
