In 1647 Barleu wrote an account of the Dutch colonial empire in Brazil inspired by the leadership of John Mauricio of Nassau, who was appointed governor of the Dutch West India Company in 1637 and continued as governor until 1644. The Awakening Valley: The Photographic Record of a Social Miracle Among the Indians of Ecuador

University of Chicago Press, 1949. 199 pages. Illustrated with photographs by Collier and his wife, Mary Trumbull Collier. At age 12, Collier (1913-1992) became the apprentice to painter, Maynard Dixon, and learned photography from Dixon's wife, Dorothea Lange. In his twenties, he worked with Paul Strand in Taos, New Mexico, and later joined the Farm Security Administration (FSA) as a photographer. His work was included in Edward Steichen's landmark exhibition, Family of Man, at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Later in life, Collier taught photography and anthropology in San Francisco, ultimately retiring as a professor from San Francisco State University. His major published work is this study of the native peoples of Ecuador, for which he took hundreds of photographs. ISBN: B000W3SVDI.
