Free Billy Smith: Black G.I. Framed on Frag Rap
[Palo Alto, CA]: Venceremos Publications, [n.d. but 1971 or 1972]. Two 8-1/2 by 11 inch sheets stapled three times along the left edge. A circular supporting Smith, who was charged with fragging (murdering) two superior officers in Viet Nam, and justifying fragging as a rational response to the racial injustice of the draft. Venceremos started in 1966 in Palo Alto as a Chicano organization, but by 1970 it had morphed into a Maoist, multiracial radical group run by white people. The group fell apart when four members were convicted of engineering the escape of Ronald Beaty from Chino prison (they attached a car he was traveling in, killing a guard). Beaty, serving a life sentence without parole was offered parole in exchange for his testimony. He took the deal. ISBN: B000Y93MKM.

The Visible College
London: Allen Lane, (1978). 376 pages. "A collective biography of British scientists and socialists of the 1930s" from the jacket cover. ISBN: 9780713908268.
First edition (first printing). Near fine in a dust jacket with some edge wear and lamination beginning to peel on rear cover. From the Harvard office library of the paleontologist and leading advocate for evolution, Stephen Jay Gould. With a tipped in bookplate indicating the provenance.
Intellectually, Gould understood the true nature of these bookplates, but the book collector in him appreciated them. In his essay "A Seahorse for All Races" Gould writes about one of his prized possessions, a book from Charles Dickens' library: "Dickens made no annotations, but a bookplate on the cover, presumably inserted as a come-on for a sale after Dickens' death in 1870, does prove that [he] kept and shelved the book."
We offer our Gould bookplates, printed letterpress in two colors, in the same spirit.Book ID: 214267More details Price: $50.00
