Annie's Coming Out
Victoria, Australia: Penguin Books, 1984. 256 pages. The story of a girl (McDonald) with cerebral palsy who was institutionalized at a young age and the efforts of her therapist (Crossley) to bring her back into society.
Crossley used "facilitated communication" with McDonald, helping her point out letters and signal her intent. A great deal of controversy surrounds the pair, with many skeptics asserting that Crossley was answering for McDonald.
In any case, McDonald earned a college degree and is celebrated as a disability activist in Australia, where a clinic for people who are unable to speak is named for her. This memoir was adapted into a film (released in the US as A Test of Love). ISBN: 9780140056884.
Third printing of the revised edition. Very good in wrappers. Inscribed by both authors, "For the measure of a man. To Stephen Jay Gould in great admiration. Anne McDonald & Rosemary Crossley." Presumably McDonald signed with the assistance of Crossley. The inscription refers to Gould's book, The Mismeasure of Man. Very uncommon signed by both authors, and a nice association.Book ID: 222720More details Price: $65.00

Morphogenesis: An Essay on Development
New York: Atheneum, 1963. 296 pages. A paperback reprint of Bonner's 1952 book on how and why organisms assume their final shape. In addition to being a noted evolutionary biologist, he was able to write clearly, for a non-academic audience. ISBN: 9780689700217.
A fine copy, in wrappers (paperback). With paleontologist Stephen Jay Gould's ownership stamp (experience suggests Gould used this stamp during his college years). Gould thanks Bonner in the introduction of his first book, Ontogeny and Phylogeny. Gould would also adopt a clear, engaging prose style, which infused even his academic papers. Bonner's work, like Mophogenesis, may well have been an influence in that regard.Book ID: 222715More details Price: $30.00
