  • [McKuen, Rod]
Photo Album: Rod McKuen in South Africa

[n.d. but 1977?]. Hallmark photo album, 9-3/4 by 5 inches, containing about 120 original color photographs, each 3-1/2 by 3-1/2 inches. Images depict Rod McKuen and others in Africa, possibly during a 1977 tour, during which "he was reportedly the first entertainer to demand that the audience be integrated" according to his obituary in the New York Times. Pictures include landscapes, sunsets, elephants, ocean waves, a rural village, and aerial views from a hot air balloon trip, along with portraits of McKuen and others. ISBN: 281AIB1032669.

Hinges cracked from bulk of photos, else very good in yellow boards with pictorial paper label. Inscribed: "To Rod with love and Africa. Ray." McKuen later wrote about this trip on his website: "Ray taught me ballooning. I even agreed to do an extra concert in South Africa and got the promoters to pay for Ray and his balloon to come to Africa, so that we could sail through the countryside." Provenance: Acquired from the estate of the singer, songwriter, and poet Rod McKuen, who sold millions of books and albums in the 1960s and 1970s.

  • "Lumber Is a Critical Material in Our Whole War Program" [poster]
"Lumber Is a Critical Material in Our Whole War Program" [poster]

Washington, DC: Lumber and Timber Products War Committee, [n.d. but 1942-1945]. Roughly 21.25 by 28.25 inches. Offset lithograph printed in red and blue. The poster attributes the title quote to Donald Nelson, the chairman of the War Production Board. The legend at the bottom of the poster reads, "Give him a hand...Boost production. Let's go now!" As the publisher was a lobbying arm of the National Lumber Manufacturers Association (now the National Forest Products Association) and the main image is a heroic portrait of Nelson, the real purpose of this poster seems to be currying favor with the War Production Board and not encouraging lumberjacks to work harder. ISBN: 281AIB0134816.

Mounted on linen and virtually flawless.

You are a production soldier...America's first line of defense is here." Hungerford was an editorial cartoonist for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette for fifty years (1927-1977).
