How We Believe: The Search for God in an Age of Science
First Edition
New York: W. H. Freeman and Company, (2000). 302 pages. This book "explores how and why humans put their faith in a higher power, even in the face of scientific skepticism" -- from the front flap. Shermer is the publisher of Skeptic magazine. ISBN: 9780716735618.
First edition (first printing). A fine copy in a fine dust jacket. Dedication copy; inscribed by the author to Stephen Jay Gould, to who is often referenced in the book and to whom the book is dedicated. "Steve -- Thanks for making our short tenure on this planet that much richer, both intellectually and spiritually. In Glorious contingency, Michael Shermer." From the Harvard office library of the paleontologist and leading advocate for evolution, Stephen Jay Gould. With a tipped in bookplate indicating the provenance.
Intellectually, Gould understood the true nature of these bookplates, but the book collector in him appreciated them. In his essay "A Seahorse for All Races" Gould writes about one of his prized possessions, a book from Charles Dickens' library: "Dickens made no annotations, but a bookplate on the cover, presumably inserted as a come-on for a sale after Dickens' death in 1870, does prove that [he] kept and shelved the book."
We offer our Gould bookplates, printed letterpress in two colors, in the same spirit.

Holograph letter
New York: 1878. George F. Seymour was an American Episcopal bishop. In 1865 he was elected professor of ecclesiastical history at General Theological Seminary. In 1871 he published "A Defence of the Professor of Ecclesiastical History Against the Assault of the Dean and Other Professors of the General Theological Seminary". Despite this in 1872 he was made acting dean and in 1875 elected to the deanship. However this appointment was voted down by the General Covention of the House of Deputies that same year. In May 1878 he accepted the position of Bishop of Springfield (Illinois) and moved west. This letter is written in the midst of this controversy. ISBN: 281AIB1049292.
One page holograph letter, 9 x 5.75 inches, written on both sides, folded for mailing, letterhead of General Theological Seminary, West 20th Street and Ninth Avenue, New York: "23 March, 1878. My Dear Sir, Your letter lays me under great obligations to you, since it gives me real comfort and satisfaction. I felt in 1874 that in days to come it would seem that the action then pursued towards me would reflect more seriously upon the ch. than upon me. Hence I wrote at the time to a Bp. and said that if the ch. could stand to inflict such treatment upon one of its sons, I would certainly with God's help bear the trial. The bitterness with which I have been assailed fills me with astonishment since I am at a loss to divine the cause. I have all my ministerial life through tried to mind my own business and keep myself to my own legitimate work. Your letter is of great value in my eyes and I thank uou heartily for it. With sincere respects and affectionate regards. Faithfully yours, George F. Seymour. For Henry Copper, Prof. ____, Bethleham, Pa.". Letter is tanned at edges with small closed tear at folds.
