O'Brien, a native of Ireland who died in 1862 of wounds received in the American Civil War, wrote a number of short stories with what are now science-fiction themes, including the title story of this collection, about a man who discovers a beautiful woman, visible only under a microscope. Also included here is What Was It?, an early example of invisibility in fiction; The Wondersmith, in which machines rebel. O'Brien's work was published in magazines during his lifetime and in book form, for the first time, in 1881. This is a nice illustrated edition from the early 20th century. ISBN: B000OKCXWY.

Page 9 of all the subscriber's copies examined have 31-lines (two issues of the regular issue have been identified, one with 30 lines and the other with 31). ISBN: 281AIB1040480.
